Lewis "Jumbo" Johnson Student-Athlete Award
In 1975, the Media Oldtimers Association decided to recognize outstanding student-athletes. Initially, the group honored Nether Providence and Penncrest Seniors. The Award was first named after Francis “Bub” Malseed, an early Inductee into the Hall of Fame for Baseball and a member of one of Media’s great sports families.
When Nether Providence and Swarthmore school districts merged, the Media Oldtimers elected to recognize Penncrest High School students, a tradition that continues today.
In 2003, the Executive Committee of the Media Area Sports Hall of Fame, renamed the Award in memory of Lewis “Jumbo” Johnson, the group’s 1992 Sportsperson of the Year. The former Director of the Media Youth Center and Staff Member at Penncrest High School was a role model and mentor to local youth and a beloved member of the
Media Area Community.
